Biography

Heather Kocsis (b.1974) is an internationally respected Canadian artist recognized for her innovative art-making process of architecturally inspired wooden wall sculptures. Perfecting her technique since 1999, she calls the sculptures “wood assemblages”.

In an unprecedented combination of skill and expertise, Heather captures the lives and stories bound within the walls of our homes, workplaces, skyscrapers, museums, and temples. With each creation, Heather reminds us of our own sense of home and our connection to community.

Kocsis received an Honours B.F.A. from Queen’s University in Kingston, CA. During a second year residency in Venice, Italy, Kocsis experienced the profound effects of architecture and our built environment. Extensive travel continues to expand her artistic vision.

In 2001 Kocsis’s first solo exhibition consisted of fourteen wood assemblages and yielded critical acclaim, with the purchase of the entire collection opening night by a private art collector. The collection remains on loan for the public to enjoy at Kitchener City Hall, Ontario, CA. Since then, with over 50 exhibitions throughout North America, Kocsis has exhibited and sold works at the vetted Architectural Digest Design Show in Manhattan, NY, for 6 consecutive years where her wood assemblages acquired international respect and recognition for being one of a kind. Heather Kocsis’s work is studied within the curriculum of the Philadelphia School for Creative and Performing Arts. Her work is in the documentary series, “Making Art Toronto” from award-winning filmmakers, The Brass Brothers.

Notable commissions include The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, CA; 5 Penn Plaza, NY, NY; A collection of nine custom artworks for the office of Isherwood Geostructural Engineers, Toronto, CA; St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, Kitchener, CA; The City Reliquary Museum, NY, NY. Kocsis was selected to create a wood assemblage of the iconic Canadian Tire Store to celebrate the corporation’s 100-year celebration. Her work is also included in The Public Art Collection of the City of Toronto.

The pandemic initiated an international collaboration with artists from Russia, Mexico, Iran, and Canada. Gratefully receiving grants from the Canada Council and The Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, Kocsis continues to collaborate to create art projects that have the ability to transcend demographics.

Invited to speak on peer panels to discuss her experience with international border crossing and participation in art fairs, Kocsis enjoys being an art juror, and guest speaker to community service clubs. A member of the Academy of Arts for Kitchener Waterloo, Kocsis continues to mentor emerging artists and belongs to the Grand River Arts Collective, a Waterloo Region organization that advocates for opportunities and growth for artists.

Heather Kocsis accepts commissions internationally and her studio is based in Cambridge, ON, Canada.
